The state’s peak business organisation, the NSW Business Chamber, says the NSW Government’s new energy efficiency package is a good first step in helping businesses to tackle rising energy costs.
“NSW small businesses are experiencing a 20% increase in electricity prices since July this year while manufacturers have seen their electricity bills double over the last 12 months”, said NSW Business Chamber Chief Executive Stephen Cartwright.
“Businesses are telling us that these increased energy costs are unsustainable and time is running out before they need to cut back on new investment and jobs,” Mr Cartwright said
“While there has been considerable chatter by governments on how to address the many drivers behind these price rises, governments need to recognise that an urgent response is required to mitigate the impact of higher prices now.
“Making businesses more energy efficient is part of the solution which is why the NSW Business Chamber has been calling for NSW Government action in this area.
“Many businesses do not have the time, know-how or funding to seek out options for energy efficient equipment upgrades so government programs to address these barriers is a welcome initiative.
“The NSW Business Chamber will continue working with the Government on the detail of the small business programs while also ensuring that these programs are implemented as soon as possible.
“However it should be noted that this package is not the be-all and end-all for NSW government action; many businesses have already installed efficient equipment but energy bills remain too high.
“The Government’s recognition of the need for policies for small business to combat rising energy prices has our firm support, however we also urge Governments to continue focusing on how to make energy bills and offers easier to understand and how to bring down high electricity generation prices,” Mr Cartwright said.
